Simon Thornton (-3) edged out Ricky Whitford (-2) and Noel Murray (-2) to win the Ping Ulster Golfers Alliance Final at Concra Wood GC.
The RCD man has dominated the PGA in the North of Ireland winter series and headed into the final UGA event with five victories tucked under his belt.
He started strongly at the Castleblayney venue with a birdie at the par five first, getting up and down from the edge of the green. Four pars followed before he dropped a shot at the tricky par three sixth, failing to get up and down for par after missing the green with an eight iron. He rounded off his front nine with three more pars to reach the turn in level par 36.
A birdie at the par four 11th kick-started his back nine and further birdies followed at the par five 13th and 15th.
A dropped shot at the 16th where he flew the green with his approach halted his momentum somewhat but he responded with a birdie at the par four 17th and parred the 18th to come home in three under 33.
Murray (Massereene) and Whitford (Knock) both signed for a two under par 70’s, with Whitford producing a superb four-birdie, bogey free back nine.
Castle Hume’s Shaun Donnelly guided his team of Graham Veitch (11), Tom Grimsley (12) and Michael Kearney (14) to the team prize with 96pts.
The amateur gross prize was collected by Clandeboye GC three-handicapper Ian Smyth with 30pts. The best nett went to Kilkeel GC scratch golfer Sean Ross with a superb 39pts.
