As befits the world number one, Leona Maguire played a leading role for GB&I in their narrow 12 ½ -11 ½ Vagliano Trophy defeat at Malone GC.
The Duke University student led the way in all four sessions against Europe, finishing the two-day event unbeaten with 3½ points out of four.
“I would loved to have gotten four points but three and half is as close as it comes,” said the Slieve Russell golfer who is playing in this week’s Ladies European Tour event, the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters.
“When you are out first, it’s important to try and get points on the board early and sort of rally everyone behind.
“It’s great when they can see that you have finished and that you have won. That was big this week.

“The European team is very strong this week. I didn’t think we would get as close as we did so overall it was a pretty good week.”

Facing Luna Strom in the Saturday singles, the 20-year-old dominated from the start, winning the first two holes and racing to a four up lead at the turn.
She won the 10th to go five up, lost the 13th and 15th before finally closing out the match with a win on the 16th.
Maguire’s only ‘blip’ came during the Saturday foursomes when she and partner Olivia Mehaffey lost the 18th to halve their match with Noemi Jimenez and Luna Sobron.
“We probably should have got the win this morning so I was a little frustrated,” she added.
“I had a little bit extra going out in the afternoon. I didn’t want to be in that position again.”
After this week’s LET event at the Buckinghamshire, Maguire’s next port of call with be the European Ladies Team Championships in Denmark 7-11 July.
