Some interesting comments from Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD at the recent Golfers Guide to Ireland Golf Club awards at Druids Glen Golf Club, Wicklow.
While acknowledging signs of economic improvement as a potential boost to club membership, Ms O’Connor identified the importance of clubs recruiting and retaining young players in a competitive sporting environment.
Recent evidence from the GUI proves that there has been no immediate signs of a upsurge in golf activity amongst junior golfers in the wake of Rory McIlroy’s success.

Dun Laoghaire, and, Royal Co. Down, were nominated winners of the Golfers Guide to Ireland ‘best parkland and links 2015’ Golf Club Awards.
The awards recognise leadership roles played by Irish Golf Clubs and associated golf interests on the island of Ireland. These included awards for overall island of Ireland and provincial parklands and links clubs, golf club secretaries and managers, along with golf resorts and hotels specialising in golf travel and tourism.
Winners received a specially commissioned certificate in recognition of their achievement. All awards were won on the basis of an all Ireland poll undertaken from within the golf and golf related business community.
Paddy McCarthy, Director, Golfer’s Guide to Ireland magazine said he was completely confident the successes achieved by our current crop of Irish professional superstars will continue to grab headlines the Ireland golf brand on the international stage.
He said, “Royal County Down will be the centre of world attention for the Irish Open in May, particularly with both Rory McIlroy and America’s Ricky Fowler in the field. Add to this the prospect of a star studded golf team in the forthcoming Olympics, under Team Leader and Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley raises hopes of even better days to come.
“In amateur golf the World Amateur Team Championships 2018 will be hosted by Carton House. With so many positives coming on stream at all levels it was a privilege to recognise individual achievement by those involved in the grass roots of our industry.”
