Damian Mooney recovered from a disastrous start to his back nine to post a four-under-par 66 and win the PGA Ulster Grand Prix round six, at Ardglass.
Mooney grabbed seven birdies in total, beginning with a three at the par four third hole where he chipped to one foot followed by a four at the long ninth, where he was only four feet from the flag with a drive and eight iron but took two putts to get down.
He missed the green at the 10th hole finishing with a bogey four and then added an ugly double-bogey seven to his card at the 11th when he fired his second shot into the sea.
That didn’t faze the winner however, as he hit the birdie trail from the 13th where he got down from eight feet after a three wood and pitch to the green. At the 400 yard 14th he drove the green downwind and got home in two putts before reaching the surface at the long 15th with a drive and wedge for another birdie four. His approach to the 16th finished just an inch from the cup for yet another birdie and he polished off his birdie blitz with a three wood chip and putt at the last.
Ulster teenage inter-pro player Tiarnan McLarnon (Massereene) won the amateur’s gross prize on 38 points and he also combined with his club assistant pro Noel Murray to post a winning 45 points in the team event.
The next Grand Prix will be at Ballycastle on January 14. The Ulster Golfers’ Alliance members will return to Ardglass for their outing on January 7.
