McElhinney and Mooney share the spoils at Castlerock

Former tour player Brian McElhinney was forced to share the limelight with Damien Mooney in the Daly Putter Ulster Golfers’ Grand Prix at Castlerock.
McElhinney and Mooney both posted a four-under-par 69 and both clipped a shot off four of the five long holes on the seaside track, in the mild conditions.
Three birdies over the opening six holes set McElhinney, a former British Amateur champion, on his way. He chipped and putted from the edge of the third green for birdie four, pencilled in another four at the fifth hole, with a drive and rescue to 30 feet, and was just five feet from the flag at six with a drive and pitching wedge.
Without a bogey on the way out, the Donegal man turned in three-under-33 but missed the green at 10 to drop a stroke. That stroke was recovered at the long 11th when he got up-and-down from a greenside bunker and he holed from 12 feet for birdie three at 13.
The joint winner again missed the green at the short 14th to drop a shot but he chipped and putted from the edge of the green at 17 for another birdie.
Mooney had a yo-yo performance with eight birdies, six pars and four bogeys carded. He reached the turn in level-par-36 after birdies at the long third hole, where he was on the surface with a drive and sand iron, the short fourth with a six iron to eight feet and the sixth where he rolled home a 20-footer.
His dropped shots came at the first where he three-putted and at the eighth and ninth.
A flick to five feet at 10, two putts from 15 feet at the long 11th, a drive just 20 yards short from the green at 13 and two putts from 25 feet at 15 gave Mooney four birdies. He then three-putted the 16th green for bogey four but chipped and putted from just two yards at the next hole to share top of the leaderboard with McElhinney.
Steven Davidson, a five-handicapper from Helen’s Bay, took the amateur nett prize on 42 points. He also combined with pro Gary Wardlow to card a winning 45 points in the team event while Kyle McCarron, a North West four-handicapper, won the gross award with 39 points.
