Allen powers to Ping Ulster Alliance success at Belvoir Park

A NEW name topped the professionals’ leaderboard, at Belvoir Park with Galgorm Castle assistant, David Allen, posting a two-under-par 69 to win the Ping Ulster Golfers’ Alliance outing.
Allen finished one stroke ahead of Peter Martin and three better than Paul Gray to take the pro’s winning cheque. He also led in the winning team, all Galgorm members, on 85 points.
Allen didn’t start well, driving into trees off both the first and second tees to pencil in back-to-back bogey fives however, it didn’t unsettle him and he got back on track with birdies at five and six.
A drive, five wood, chip and putt gave him his four at the long fifth hole and he holed a 10-footer on the next green, after a drive and nine iron to the surface. A seven iron, to six feet, off the eighth tee set up birdie two for the winner to turn one-under-35.
When the Galgorm player failed to get up-and-down from greenside sand, at 12, he dropped another shot but regained the lost ground with a seven iron to seven feet for birdie three at the next hole. He was then on in two blows for birdie at the long 15th and a homeward run of 34.
Galgorm’s minus-one handicapper Michael Reid took the amateur’s gross prize on 34 points while Dungannon’s one-handicapper Joe Timlin was best in the nett section with 39 points, pushing Warrenpoint scratch man Steven Coulter into second place on the back nine (20 points to 17).
