Wardlow strikes at Royal Belfast

THE new season of PGA Northern Branch tournaments swung into action yesterday with Gary Wardlow winning the first in a series of Daly Golf Grand Prix events at Royal Belfast.
The Dunmurry pro posted a three-under-par 67 to be four strokes clear of the field. Wardlow raced to the turn in three-under-32 with birdies at the second, fifth and eighth holes.
At the second, he holed from three feet after a drive and nine iron to the green and then trimmed a shot off the long fifth with a drive, three wood, chip and putt. At eight, the winner rolled in a six-footer, following a drive and sand-wedge to the surface.
He dropped shots at short holes 11 and 14 but recovered with birdie fours at 16 and 18, reaching the green in two blows at the 16th and, after a drive and three wood just off the green, at the last, he got down with a chip and putt.
Last year’s Ulster Boys’ champion, scratch player John Ross Galbraith (Whitehead), won the amateur’s Best Nett with 35 points while Lurgan five-handicapper Damian Murphy took the Nett award, also on 35 points. The team prize was won by Dungannon combination of pro Chris Jelly and one-handicapper Joe Timlin.
