Hoey to compete in Ulster PGA Championship

TWO-TIME European Tour winner, Michael Hoey, has committed to play in the Ulster PGA Championship next month at the Hilton Templepatrick Hotel and Country Club.
Hoey, the winner of the Madeira Islands Open title back in May will tee it up from September 12-14 at the Co Antrim venue.
“This is a great course and venue for such an event on the PGA calendar and, it will provide a top class test for all the competitors,” said Michael.
Also set to play are Simon Thornton, Ryder Cup Hero Phillip Walton, 2010 Order of Merit winner David Higgins and defending champion Barrie Trainor who will be joined by 130 top Irish professional golfers battling it out for one of Europe’s oldest trophies.
The tournament is returning to the Hilton Templepatrick after a nine year break.
Leslie Walker was the last winner at the Hilton, shooting rounds of 68/69 over the 7000+ yard par 72 course which was designed by David Jones and David Feherty.
“We have had two really fantastic events at Templepatrick back in 2001/2002 and we are again looking to repeat the past success in 2011,” said the Irish Region Secretary Michael McCumiskey.
“The event depends on the support from members and local club golfers and the course is in pristine condition.”
Paula Collins the Hotel Manager is delighted to be welcoming back the PGA professionals.
“The golf course has matured tremendously since we last hosted the event back in 2002 and I’m sure that all the professionals and amateur competitors in the Pro-Am preceding the event, will be pleasantly surprised as to how the course has toughened up and become more defined,” said Paula.
“Michael Loughran and his greenkeeping staff have worked tirelessly to prepare for this and all other events during the season.”
Club Captain Peter Wadsworth has promised a warm welcome to all the amateurs and professionals taking part.
“The members were all very excited when the news was confirmed about the staging of the PGA Championship and we will be interested to see how the professionals perform on our course,” he said.
